This week speaker - Eva Kim
Hello! My name is Eva Kim, MD and I recently moved to Colorado from Palo Alto, CA in 8/2016.  I am a mother of 3 beautiful children, Jamie (9), Grayson (6), and Sia (3). I am a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist (treating diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration) as well as a Uveitis Specialist.  I love spending time with family and friends! I stay very active and I am obsessed with an exercise regimen called Lagree Fitness.  I also am learning to love skiing again with my family now that we are here in the beautiful state of Colorado!

Recycle for Sight (Correction)
Denver Lions your help is needed.  Our community outreach event this year is RECYCLED FOR SIGHT on the Mall on Tuesday April 11.  Instead of our normal meeting we will be collecting glasses for recycling. We will set up three collection locations on the Mall.  We will still have a buffet lunch while you help out.

As important as collecting glasses on April 11, is telling the public to bring the used eye glasses.  We need a lot of Lions on Friday April 7 to pass out flyers.  This flyer is a way to tell everyone to bring eyeglass to work the next Tuesday to donate.  We will also pass out flyers in the office buildings and merchants.  The flyer not only tells about the event but also promotes Lions.

We will need a lot of Lions on Friday April 7.  We will have a late morning and early afternoon shift for about two hours.

Mark your calendars for April 7 and 11.  More details next week.

We are trying new ideas for our community outreach and this is one of them.
St Patrick's Day Mixer
Regardless of family roots or Irish heritage, wear your green and come celebrate St Patrick's Day with your fellow Lions. Since the 1700s, St. Paddy’s Day celebrants have worn green because they believed it made them invisible to leprechauns, Irish fairies who pinched anyone they could see. Avoid getting pinched (by leprechauns or enthusiastic humans) by donning green attire for the day.

Event: St Patrick's Day Mixer
Date:  Thursday March 16
Time:  5:30 to 8:00
Location: First Baptist Church, 1373 Grant St, 80203
Parking:  In lot just south of the church.
Bring: An appetizer to share.

Did you know that St. Patrick’s story begins as a young man in the fifth century, when at age 16 he was kidnapped from his British home by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland.

It’s a grim beginning to a story that would shape Ireland’s national holiday. But while captive in Ireland, working as a shepherd, Patrick found God, who instructed him to escape to the Irish coast, where a ship would be waiting to ferry him home. What happened next is unclear — he either went straight back to Britain or took a detour through France.

What we do know is that he became a Catholic priest and eventually returned to Ireland, where he spent much of the rest of his life proselytizing to pagan Irishmen. Because he was one of the first missionaries sent to the country, he spent much time in its western and northern reaches. Deeply associated with the Catholic Church structure there, he ordained priests, divided the country into dioceses, and founded several monasteries. You may wonder why the shamrock is so deeply associated with this holiday. It’s because in his missionary work, St. Patrick supposedly used the clover to explain the holy trinity.

The mark he left on the country grew in legend over centuries, and now he is considered one of the country’s foremost saints. The Irish people remember him each March 17, the day it is said he died. It’s unclear whether St. Patrick’s body is buried in Ireland, as legend has it. But while he was still alive, the man often said he was willing to die in Ireland so that his mission might prove successful.

Your Denver Lions Foundation at Work
David Lambert and Ron Ludwig of the Denver Lions Foundation presented a check to the Lions Camp.  Jodi Franke, the new camp director, accepted the check.  Also attending the meeting was Tim Yoakum and his son Mark.   As Mark had attended the Lions Camp for the last two summers, Tim gave us some insight on how the camp helps both the campers and the parents.  Mark has tried new things at the camp, such as horse riding,  He is excited about going again.   This is just one example of your Denver Lions Foundation donations at work.
