A Call to Action

This weeks edition of A Call to Action is:

We need volunteers for the Lions Peace Poster contest.  This is really easy and does not take much time.  Here is all you will need to do:

  • Each Lion volunteer will contact one middle school art teacher. This can be a school near you.
  • You will meet with the art teacher explaining the rules and give them the package of information.  This will need to be done between the time school’s open about August 15 and September 15.
  • The teachers will have their students make the posters.  They will also judge their students posters.  The Lion volunteer will then go to the school to pick up the winning posters and give a monetary award and certificate to the 1st 2nd and 3rd winners.  This needs to be done between October 15 and 22.
  • The Lion team will judge the winner from the school 1st place winners.  This poster will go to the district judging and hopefully onto to the International level judging.  The winner poster from out club must be sent to the district by November 1.
Denver Den Roarings

Hello 21st Century

Greetings Lions! Welcome to the new edition of the Roarings. In an effort to bring the Denver Den into the 21st century, with the guidance of Lions Fletcher, Dwight, Sam, Erika, Ellie, and Kelly, we have gone digital! This is our first  digital edition of the Roarings.  Please be patient with our efforts as we learn how to navigate through the process.  We also have a  new website you may peruse at your leisure. On the new website, you can find a list of the upcoming speakers, list of upcoming events, a monthly calendar so that you may schedule volunteer opportunities, such as KidSight.  You can pay your dues, find the list of Glasses for the Masses locations, information on hearing donations, and foundation donations. You can direct folks to our website who would like more information about our club, the RMLEI and Eye Bank, Savio House, Rude Park, and all the wonderful contributions the Denver Lions Club offers to the community of Denver.  The plan is to "go live" with the new website on September 1st.

The Denver Five Points Community Day - Denver Den KidSight

In conjunction with The Denver Five Points Lions the Denver Den provided KidSight screening at the annual Denver Five Point Lions Community Day on August 9th. At the annual celebration, the community came out and enjoyed fun, games, face painting, balloon animals, and snow cones.  The Denver Five Point Lions served  their community by handing out school supply bags for the kiddos. A valuable service that assists families who may not be able to purchase all the needed supplies. This year they gave away more than 300 bags filled with supplies.

The Denver Lions set up the KidSight screening tent. We screened 66 kids and referred 9 with potential vision problems. The KidSight screening provides valuable service for the children by alerting the parents to any vision problems the children might have. Every parent wants their child to succeed and undiagnosed vision issues can be a problematic issue. Thanks to Team McKenzie (BG, Donna, Sam, and Max),  and Fletcher for their help.  Great Job Lions!
Denver Den at the Denver Broncos 9 Health Fair

The Bronco’s are teaming up with 9 Health Fair for a really big health fair. KidSight will be there and will need your help.
An exciting event with something for the entire family.  Beyond the KidSight booth and other health booths, there will also be:
  • Autograph & photo opportunities with Broncos players,
  • Contests & giveaways
  • Family-friendly sports activities
  • Entertainment & demonstration stages
  • Meet 9News anchors & reporters
  • Healthy food samples
  • Sports simulators
  • Inflatable games
  • On-field football drills
This is going to be a really fun event with a lot of kids to screen.
Volunteering: Shifts 9 am to noon and noon to 3 pm

Location:     Sports Authority Field at Mile High
Event:         Bronco’s Health and Wellness Expo
Date:           Saturday Sept 5 and Sunday Sept 6
Time:          9 am to 3 pm both days
Entry:         Gate 10
Contact:      Fletcher Brown 303.619.8486 or brownsinco@gmail.com

Even if you have never tried KidSight this is a great opportunity to try it and have fun at the expo. No experience necessary. We are expecting a large number of kids to screen so we will need a lot of help.   Please contact Fletcher if you can help.

Membership Dues Increase

Due to the current financial situation of the Club and based on the results of the recent survey of members, the Board has increased quarterly dues by the amount show below for each type of membership.
  • Active Members: $15 per quarter
  • Affiliate Members: $10 per quarter
  • Active Family Members: $10 per quarter
  • Affiliate Family Members: $5 per quarter
  • Life-Active Members:  $10 per quarter
  • Life Members: $5 per quarter
  • Member at Large Members: $10 per quarter
The dues increase will become effective with the October 1st 2015 invoices.

This dues change moves the club to a solid financial situation while we research other alternatives and opportunities.  The results of the survey also showed many of our members are open to change. The new board will be looking at alternatives for meeting locations, mixers, alternative meetings to attract new members, and many more. This dues changes does not preclude any changes that will improve the club.

Together we will find solutions that will enable the Denver Lions to continue to service the community as we have for almost a 100 years.
KidSight 2015

Another summer gone and the school year has begun. You know what that means … KidSight events are scheduled! Did you know you do not need experience to be a screener? One screening in which you assist is all you need and are all set to go it alone. We have many schools scheduled in September and could use your help! We are still working on the new website which will include a calendar.  Until then here are the first screenings of the season.
Please contact Fletcher Brown to volunteer at 303.619.8486  brownsinco@gmail.com

Be the Free Range Lions

What kind of preacher am I? Come on, what kind of preacher am I? And where am I? Where am I? I'm at  the zoo. You notice how lions that are caged up, they just become very mundane? They do the same old
thing. They pace, they lose their courage, they lose their sense of being, they lose their reason for being, because they're just in this habit of just pacing back and forth. They wear a path because they never
wander out. They never do anything new. They just wander around. Well, is that what you're doing with your lionism? Is that what you're doing by not reaching out? I love to see the attendance here today. This is how we should fill this room every time. We should expand into another room again, because we break   out of those little trenches. Because we think about who we should invite to be part of the great need that
we have in Colorado, so don't be the lion in the zoo. Be the lion in the free range and roar.
A Message from Lions Clubs International Foundation

Dear Lions,
20518736168_e51c7952ee_o.jpg?r=1440011141592
Earlier this month, Typhoon Soudelor tore through the Pacific Ocean. Once a super-typhoon, Soudelor has claimed dozens of lives already. Millions of families are without water, electricity or shelter. The storm has caused monsoon rains, high winds, flooding and landslides throughout the region.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) responded immediately. A US$10,000 Emergency grant was awarded to the Lions of District 204 Micronesia for relief efforts in Saipan. A US$200,000 Major Catastrophe grant was awarded to Multiple District 300 Taiwan to assist with both immediate needs and long-term reconstruction.

The Lions of MD 300 Taiwan, China and Micronesia are coming to the aid of their neighbors. But they need your help. Rebuilding after Typhoon Soudelor will be no easy task, but Lions and our Foundation are committed to supporting the humanitarian needs within these communities for the short and long term. Please consider making a contribution to LCIF's disaster relief fund and giving hope to those who have been devastated by this disaster.

Our thoughts and prayers go out all who have been affected by Typhoon Soudelor.

Sincerely,
Joe Preston
Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

Lion Ivar P. "Swede" Carlson

Ivar P. "Swede" Carlson was born on July 24, 1928 in Denver, Colorado to Ivar and Elsie (Nord) Carlson. Elsie passed soon after his birth and he was lovingly raised by his new mother Henrietta (Lindahl) and father Ivar at the family home in Englewood, Colorado. He is survived by his younger sister Virginia (Tom) and his younger brother Eddie (Maxine). He graduated from Englewood High school in 1946. Ivar proudly served his country in the United States Army (1946-1948) and the Air Force Reserves (1948-1952).
Ivar married Phyllis Muhr on October 14, 1951 and quickly started their family. They raised their three sons Darryl, Paul, and Neil and moved the family from Grand Junction to Lakewood in 1967. Over the years the family has grown to include: two daughters-in-law, Charlotte and Jan; seven grandchildren and spouses, Melissa, Nathan, Michael
(Joanne), Nicholas (Lisa), Angela, Erik (Kayann), and Kirsten; and six great-grandchildren, Paul, Abigail, Kendall, Christian, Adele and Gabriel. Ivar lost his precious, loving wife Phyllis on August 12, 2010. His final wish to be reunited with her for eternity has finally come true. Ivar worked in the freight transportation business as a salesman and sales manager for Rio Grande Motorway and Nortwest/Westway Transport prior to his retirement. Ivar was an active lifetime member of the Denver Lions Club serving as club president in1994-95. He was also a member of the MasonicLodge and the VASA Swedish Lodge. He was a longtime member of Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church. He treasured all of the friendships and memories he experienced while being a member of these organizations. Ivar was a loyal fan and season ticket holder of the Denver Broncos and also enjoyed attending Colorado Rockies games.
