The first white cane On a busy Peoria Street Corner, at 1930, George Bonham, president of the Peoria Lions Club, noticed Elmer Thompson, struggling to cross the busy intersection with a black cane. Befriending Thomas Bothham exterminated with painting his canes in an attempt to create a visible symbol to drivers; one of these canes, displayed here, was painted white with a red tip and ultimately became the first white cane for the blind in America.
